Will My Clients Come With Me If I Leave Edward Jones? — Clip with Clark Johnson

A quick look at what really happens when an advisor transitions: most clients don’t leave because of a firm, they follow because of trust. The biggest “objection” usually isn’t the new platform, pricing, or process… it’s simply the discomfort of change.

Intro Hook

Unknown: really it was just me putting out fires I was calling people back and I could not call people back faster than they were calling me I had I had one client show up on my doorstep I was telling everyone the same thing we we left for four reasons

Client Surprises + Objections

Unknown: what were some of the surprises that you had with clients that you know you thought for sure that they were going to come with you and and and maybe they didn’t like what or what were some of their hesitations so you know advis that are considering you know changing could potentially be prepared

Unknown: they they really they really didn’t even have an objection um it was just like that that 10% that didn’t come over it was really just it was change in general

Unknown: any any other objection that we could discuss that got brought up it was just very easy to answer

Why Clients Came Over

Unknown: I mean we were telling people well first off the first half of the clients we brought over they weren’t even coming over because of what advantages I had by going independent they were just coming over because they didn’t they couldn’t imagine doing business with anyone else but me yeah okay

Unknown: so I I couldn’t so the objections really weren’t as big of a deal as what I thought they were going to be before I left Jones

Transition Firefighting

Unknown: really it was just me putting out fires I was calling people back and I could not call people back faster than they were calling me I had I had one client show up on my doorstep you know I couldn’t even go through you know hey these are the reasons Alex and I left before they’re already saying hey we don’t know where you went or what happened but we’re with you buddy wherever you go

Four Reasons for Leaving

Unknown: if if it when it did come to that time when I was having more in-depth conversations I was telling everyone the same thing we we left for four reasons

Unknown: one um we wanted more investment options at ever Jones I felt like we only had about access to a third of the investment options out there

Unknown: secondly we wanted access to other people’s technology there were limitations in ever Jones’s technology um that didn’t allow me to do my job as well I mean there are limitations in the financial planning software uh we couldn’t use booking links to schedule appointments um just little things like that

Unknown: um I wanted clients wanted to give me the ability to take discretion for them um I was sick and tired of picking and choosing my favorite clients every Jones said I had to go down the line and call everybody to place of trade well it might be all year before I get through that list when trade should have been placed a long time ago you know so here I am having to pick and choose who I’m going to call first they’re not going to call me back they’re going to go along with what I say nine times out of 10 and so having discretion allows me to treat everyone fairly and clients wanted to give me that

Unknown: and then lastly I wanted control over my staff at my office if we make another hiring mistake like what happened with me at ever Jones I want the freedom to just walk that person out the door okay um and I take that on

Client Responses + Common Questions

Unknown: so when I shared those four reasons with clients they were just like sounds good sign me up it was only a small percentage that had objections and it really wasn’t even objections it was just questions like so who is LPL in oh they’re just the largest independent broker dealer in in the in the world yeah oh okay

Unknown: uh so th those were very easy objections

Unknown: the hard ones was I don’t have any reason for not coming over it’s just it’s just very uncomfortable for me to change and so some people they just need time that that’s
